Greece’s women thrashed Turkey by 29 points on Thursday and made it to the semifinals of the 2017 Eurobasket in the Czech Republic as well as to the next World Championship.
The national team won 84-55 at the quarterfinal in Prague producing one of its best performances ever against another of the tournament’s favorites; it had already beaten holder Serbia and three-time winner Russia.
On Thursday the Greeks had 100 percent in free throws and 52 percent in three-pointers, along with 21 assists against Turkey’s 10.
Led by Evina Maltsi, scorer of 25 points, the Greek underdogs turned a tough quarterfinal into a stroll in the park and are bracing for Saturday’s semifinal – the first in Greece’s history – against the winner of the tie between France and Slovakia.
Last week Greek basketball celebrated the 30th anniversary of its first major title on national team level, the men’s Eurobasket of 1987. This time it is the women’s team that is writing a new chapter in Greek basketball’s history!
