Greek-American film director Louie Psihoyos at the 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival

Greek-American film director Louie Psihoyos at the 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival

Greek-American film director Louie Psihoyos, a pioneer in ecological documentaries, gave a press conference at the 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, where he was invited to present 10 ecological documentaries of his preference. At a special event, the festival also honored Psihoyos with the Golden Alexander and screened his Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove”.

Psihoyos talked about his early years of growing up in a small Greek community in America: “That community had a lot of love. Greeks have an attitude about life that the rest of the world does not have. They have a sense of humanity that does not exist in America. So do not forget what you have. Even if the financial crisis continues, you know what it means to care about each other, what makes us people. With this attitude we will overcome it all …”. Psihoyos also commented on how cinema can be an arm of mass mobilization, giving the example of “The Cove” that “helped reduce the killing of dolphins in Japan by 93%.”

The 21st Thessaloniki Documentary Festival opened on Friday, March 1, with the European premiere of the documentary “Marian and Leonard: Words of Love” by Nick Broomfield, about the legendary love between Leonard Cohen and Marian Ilene in Hydra in the 60s, and will end Sunday March 10.
