Greek community in mourning after the Koimisis Tis Theotokou Church was heavily damaged by fire

For the second time in the past 30 years, a focal point of the Greek community of Montreal has perished in flames. When much of the Koimisis Tis Theotokou Church in Parc-Extension was destroyed by fire on Monday night, it evoked memories of the 1986 blaze that claimed the downtown Holy Trinity Church at Sherbrooke and Clark Sts. Some members of the Greek Orthodox Church community have not forgotten how fundraising efforts to rebuild the 121-year-old Holy Trinity Church led nowhere, and how a wrecking ball eventually brought down its formidable stone walls. Marie Griffiths, host of a Greek community radio show, hopes history won’t repeat itself if attempts are made to rebuild Koimisis Tis Theotokou.
