Greek Judge Sicilianos Elected President of European Court of Human Rights

Greek judge Linos Alexandros Sicilianos was elected as President of the European Court of Human Rights on Monday.

According to a press release issued by the court on Monday afternoon, Sicilianos will take office on May 5, 2019.

Sicilianos will succeed the Italian Guido Raimondi in this highly prestigious position in the realm of European justice.

Sicilianos was born in Athens in 1960 and he graduated from the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1983.

He has a Masters degree in International Law from the University Robert Schuman of Strasbourg, where he became a Doctor of Law in 1990.

Sicilianos is already the author of five monographs and approximately one hundred articles and studies in general international law and the international protection of human rights. He has published works in French, English and Greek. The jurist has also been an editor or co-editor of fourteen books.

The European Court of Human Rights is a regional human rights judicial body based in Strasbourg, France, and it was created under the auspices of the Council of Europe. It was established in 1959.
