Greek PM Mitsotakis and Wife Mareva Attend Dinner Hosted by President Trump and First Lady Melania

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife Mareva Grabowski-Mitsotakis attended a dinner given by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on Wednesday evening in honor of UN General Assembly delegates.

Mitsotakis and Trump are both in New York this week for the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The scheduled Tuesday evening meeting between the two leaders was cancelled after US Democrats opened a formal impeachment inquiry into the president over allegations that he sought help from a foreign power to damage political rival Joe Biden.

Shortly before the scheduled meeting, the president returned to Trump Tower for “executive time” to watch Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announcing the formal impeachment inquiry.

The cancellation of the meeting gave rise to speculation by Greek opposition media that Trump had never scheduled a meeting with Mitsotakis.

However, on Thursday a spokesperson for the US Embassy in Athens confirmed that a meeting had indeed been scheduled two days earlier.

“A meeting between President Trump and Prime Minister Mitsotakis was scheduled for Tuesday, September 24 in New York. Unfortunately, due to scheduling constraints, the meeting was ultimately canceled.

The United States and Greece have a longstanding, robust, and multifaceted partnership. The upcoming U.S. - Greece Strategic Dialogue in Athens underscores our mutual commitment to deepen cooperation,” the spokesperson added.
