Greek Poet Titos Patrikios to be Feted in London

Greek Poet Titos Patrikios to be Feted in London

The life and work of the acclaimed 90-year old Greek poet Titos Patrikios will be celebrated at a special event in London on March 10, 2019.

Patrikios, who turns 91 in May, is expected to attend the event in person.

The event will include the recitation of some of his poetry, screenings of audiovisual material, music and lectures on his life and work.

Patrikios has said that he will return to the British capital after many years of absence on March 10 in order to attend the event and meet his Greek and British friends. He will also be greeting the public in attendance, who will have the opportunity to talk with the author.

The event will be sponsored by the Greek Library of London in cooperation with the British Poetry Office. It will be held under the auspices of the Greek Culture Ministry, the Greek Embassy in London and the Greek Writers’ Society.

“The most important thing is not to withdraw into a shell and into our solitude,” Patrikios told the state-run AMNA news agency. The ninety-year-old added that “public readings and the meetings for poetry are something very useful.”

According to Poetry International Web, Patrikios’ ”combination of political engagement and scepsis about the human species, added to the low tone of his poetry, had a profound impact on the poetic generation of the ’70s.”
