Museum for Plato just opened in his neighborhood

Athens has a brand new museum, a tribute to the philosophy of Plato and the neighborhood in which the Academy was located.

Plato's Academy digital museum offers a new educational and interactive multimedia space to the public. The museum was created with the contribution of the Foundation of Hellenic World inside a building that belongs to the Municipality of Athens and showcases a series of physical exhibits and applications on various topics, dedicated to Plato, his personality, his work, and the public's perception of him. The inauguration ceremony was held by Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis and former Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou.

The museum's exhibition is like a "dip" in time. It starts from the current Athenian neighborhood of Plato's academy (Acadimia Platonos). Along a path situated in the exterior of the building, time flows back and we witness the stages of revelation and discovery of the archaeological site. We are preparing for the "acquaintance" with Plato. In the first room of the museum, we will get to know Plato as a historical figure who was active in Athens, during the 4th century BC, while, simultaneously, observe the archaeological site of "Plato's Academy" the place where he worked.

A chance to "philosophise"

The second room is dedicated to the work and methods of Plato. There, we will be given a chance to "philosophise" and realize how Plato's thought concerns us. In the third room, we will witness the ways through which Plato's work traveled through time, from his immediate successors in the Academy until today.

How did his statements affect philosophical thinking and inspired humanity? The exhibition is concluded by exiting into the contemporary neighborhood of Plato's Academy. What does it mean today to live in "Plato's neighborhood?"

The Museum is open every Tuesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 4 pm
