On February 9th, we celebrate the International Greek Language Day

A number of events will take place both in Greece and in many different parts of the world where there are Greek speakers, in the context of this year’s celebration of February 9, International Greek Language Day 2020.

“The establishing of the International Greek Language Day World Day highlights the fundamental role Greek language has played over the centuries, contributing substantially to the consolidation of both European and world culture. The ancient Greek language formulated and transmitted important scientific theories, philosophical theories and literary texts. Over the centuries, its contribution as a means of preserving and spreading Greek culture has been decisive and survives to this day, in its newest version, as one of the longest living languages ​​in the world”, states the Ministry of Education.

According to the Foreign Ministry, “on Sunday, February 9, we celebrate the International Greek Language Day, but there are already events taking place all over the world.”

The events

– A lecture on the Greek language by the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Hamburg, sponsored by the Greek Consulate in Hamburg, took place on February 4.

– A lecture on “Who needs Greek today” was organized by the Embassy of Greece in Stockholm on February 5.

– The Embassy of Greece in Bucharest organizes a student literary competition with words of Greek origin or root.

– The Greek Embassy in London organizes a debate on Modern Greek in British higher education on February 13.

– The Greek Embassy in Brussels hosts an event on “Greek language in the 21st Century” on February 6.

– The Greek community of Naples and Campania, in Naples, Italy, organizes a “Week of Greek Culture and Language” on February 9, 10, 11 and 12.
