Monuments Men: Epirus

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki presented yesterday a five-year plan to preserve and protect the monuments and cultural heritage of Epirus, Greece. The project, which will involve more than 300 members of teaching and research staff, involves the restoration of some 150 monuments in the area. The initiative was undertaken after the collapse of historic bridges in the region, as the bridge of Plaka during this winter's heavy rains.

The Head of the Region of Epirus Alexandros Kahrimanis confirmed that the regional authority accepted the proposal and a five-year contract outlining the actions to be taken is due to be signed by the end of March.

The single-arch bridges of Arta, Konitsa, Zagori and Vovousa will be given the highest priority, while the teams of experts will also examine whether the collapsed Korakas Bridge can be restored.
