A European Grant for Greek Scientist

A European Grant for Greek Scientist

A promising researcher George Garinis, Professor at the Department of Biology, University of Crete and unaffiliated group leader at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), has recently been awarded the European Research Council Consolidator Grant for his research proposal Dissecting the Functional Role of Nucleotide Excision Repair in Mammals. The proposal offers various insights into how genome maintenance pathways are connected to developmental defects and disease mechanisms, including ageing and cancer.

George Garinis heads the Genome (In)stability and Mammalian Physiology lab at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. His research focuses on DNA repair, ageing, genomics and bioinformatics with the aim to identify the natural defence mechanisms that attempt to counteract age-related pathology and prolong lifespan.
