First Art Show for ‘Berlin Painter’ After 2,500 Years

It may have taken 2,500 years, but finally the unnamed Athenian artist who is known as the “Berlin Painter” will finally exhibit his art in the first showcase of his work at the Princeton University Art Museum.

The exhibition, The Berlin Painter and His World, will open to the public in March and will showcase the works of the sculptor who created some of the most notable and celebrated art of the early fifth century BC.

Much has changed over the centuries as experts believe that the Berlin Painter was not famous in his own time at all and that he in fact led a rather quiet existence. J. Michael Padgett is the curator of ancient art at the Princeton Art Museum where the exhibit is to take place and explained to artsy.net that Athenian vase painters “were humble craftsmen” who “worked down in the potter’s corner and they were covered with mud.”

The exhibit will showcase 84 vessels and statuettes with around 54 works attributed to the “Berlin Painter.”
