“Greek Freak”, Giannis Antetokounmpo, invites the world to visit Greece

Gorgeous beaches, crystal clear blue waters, starlit skies, amazing sunsets, history-loaded archaeological sites and mouthwatering cuisine. In between, footage with highlights from the basketball court featuring Ambassador for Greek tourism, NBA superstar and Milwaukee Bucks No 34, Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“For your vacation, it has to be Greece” the Greek Freak says at the end of the 60-minute video released by the Greek Tourism Ministry and the Hellenic National Tourism Organization (EOT) to promote Greece worldwide.

“Since I met Giannis Antetokounmpo and his family, I was moved by his love for Greece. I asked him to become the Ambassador of Greek Tourism and he immediately accepted,” Minister Elena Kountoura said at press conference revealing the video on Friday.

“Throughout his international career, he has held Greece in his heart, while promoting the country worldwide,” she added.

Antetokounmpo’s family migrated from Nigeria to Greece in 1991, Giannis and his younger siblings were born in Athens. Giannis was not granted Greek citizenship until 2013, at the age of 19.

“My family and I will try our best to promote Greece’s beauties, people and culture… The most important elements in Greece’s culture are solidarity and philanthropy,” Giannis Antetokounmpo told reporters. ”This is a chance to show what it’s like to be Greek,” he added.

“I tell my team mates: Guys, if you haven’t been to Greece you’re missing out,” Antetokounmpo told reporters on Friday. “I’m calling on people to come and get to know our country and see its beauty.”

Asked to name his favorite place to visit in Greece, it was, surprisingly, not one of its countless sun-soaked islands.

“My favourite place is Athens,” he said, without hesitation. “I like that when I am in Zographou to go see the people I grew up with.”

The “Filathlitikos” club of Zographou was the first team Antetokounmpo played for. He said on Friday it is the one Greek club he would ever consider joining.

After the press conference Antetokounmpo uploaded the new video on social media, instantly making it available to thousands of his fans.
