Protecting religious liberty is a moral imperative that defends society against violent extremists, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said, addressing a crowd of over 800 prominent Greek Americans, after he received the Athenagoras Human Rights Award of the Archons of Ecumenical Patriarchate. The ceremony took place Saturday night in New York City.

Biden in his long remarks praised Greek American Community, Greek Orthodox Church and its Primate Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and he repeated the call to the Turkish Government for the protection of the religious freedom of Greek Orthodox living in Turkey.
