Stamatis Misomikes, a chef from Rhodes won the 2016 European Young Chef award. Celebrity chef Joan Roca presented the award to Misomikes. Roca along with an international jury judged the ten finalists from ten different regions of Europe. Misomikes topped them all with his use of southern Aegean ingredients and flavors. Southern Aegean governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos welcomed him on his return home.
Hatzimarkos congratulated Misomikes for his success which he characterized a great gift to the region of southern Aegean on its effort to win the title of the Gastronomic Region of Europe.
The Young Chef contest was held on November 14 at the school of Tourism of Barcelona University at Saint Paul de Marres. The Greek chef represented southern Aegean region within the context of its nomination as Gastronomic Region of Europe. Misomikes’ dish “Salas, the joy of birth” was made of 19 different ingredients and 19 different herbs from the southern Aegean.
The aims of the European Young Chef Awards are to promote innovation in traditional cuisine, highlight sustainable food cultures, and create ambassadors for local food products.
