New Greek Ambassador Presents His Credentials in Canberra

George Papacostas, Greece’s new Ambassador to Australia, presented his credentials on Wednesday in Canberra, the capital of the country.

Papacostas met formally with David Hurley, the Governor-General of Australia, in a ceremony at Government House.

Greece’s new representative to Australia is a career diplomat who served as Greece’s Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo before assuming his new post.

He has also served in crucial diplomatic positions for Greece in Slovenia, Sweden and Armenia as well as in Brussels, Belgium.

Papacostas, who speaks Greek and English, is a graduate of the School of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The new ambassador replaces Ekaterini Xagorari, who had served in that position since 2016.

The Greek Ambassador to Australia also represents the country in the geographical areas of New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Fiji and the Solomon islands, as well as Kiribati, Vanuatu, Samoa, Tonga, and Nauru.
