Papachristou earns Greece's second medal in the Europeans

Triple-jumper Voula Papachristou won Greece’s second and final medal in the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam finishing third in Sunday’s final.

In a very close contest, Papachristou led a for a long time in the final with her efforts at 14.31 meters and then 14.45 m., before being overtaken by Portugal’s Patricia Mamona (14.58 m.) and Israel’s Hanna Minenko (14.51 m.), with Papachristou bettering her performance with her last effort at 14.47 m.

It is reminded that Russian athletes were excluded from this Championships, and that in the previous Championships in 2014 two Russian jumpers had been on the podium, earning silver and bronze.

Papachristou had missed out on the London Olympics in 2012 due to a racist comment on the Internet.

Greece has ended the Championships with one gold, by pole-vaulter Katerina Stefanidi, and one bronze medal. On Sunday Michalis Anastasakis ended up fourth in the hammer-throw final with an effort at 75.89 meters.
