Two Greek doctors included in Forbes’ Honor Roll

Two Greek doctors, a cardiologist and an oncologist, feature on this year’s Top 27 list in Forbes magazine for excellence in their fields.

Dr George Raptis is a distinguished oncologist who specializes in breast cancer and Greek Cypriot Dr Stavros G. Drakos is one of U.S. top cardiologists.

Dr Raptis is Senior Vice President, Cancer Services, of Northwell Health and Acting Executive Director of Northwell Health Cancer Institute. He got his medical degree from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and completed his residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Centre.  He later earned a Master of Business Administration degree from New York University. After completing a fellowship in medical oncology and haematology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC) in Manhattan, Dr Raptis joined MSKCC’s full-time attending staff in the Solid Tumour Division, Breast and Gynecologic Cancer Medicine Service. He has practised medicine for more than 20 years. He has developed and led a pioneering multidisciplinary breast centre and breast cancer research program. He has constantly featured on various lists as a leading U.S. oncologist since 2009.

Dr Drakos is Professor of Cardiology at the University of Utah Medical School and Director of the Cardiac Deficiency, Transplantation and Mechanical Heart Support Program at the University Hospital. In addition, he teaches medicine at the Medical School of the University of Cyprus as visiting professor. He completed his fellowship in General Cardiology at the University of Athens and went on with a fellowship in Heart Failure/Transplant/Cardiac Mechanical Support at the University of Utah. Dr Drakos is the Co-Chief of Heart Failure and Transplant Section and Medical Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Program.

As Dr Drakos told Forbes, this distinction is the result of a collective effort made by a large number of people beginning from his family and extending to his colleagues in America, Greece and Cyprus, while he also stressed the importance of keeping in close contact with the ongoing developments in medicine so that medical scientists can provide high-level medical care.
