Yorgos Lanthimos to Write and Direct Crime Film ‘Pop. 1280’

Even though he didn’t pick up an Oscar as Best Director for “The Favourite”, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar buzz has put him in high demand. He has just been attached to write and direct an adaption of a crime novel titled “Pop. 1280”.

Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” did pick up an Oscar win for Olivia Colman as Best Actress, and was the most nominated movie of the Academy Awards, tied with Roma.

The new movie he is attached to, “Pop. 1280”, will be an adaptation of Jim Thompson’s crime novel of the same name, which came out in 1964.

The book’s plot follows a corrupt small town sheriff who manipulates those around him in order to gain power and win the next election.

Lanthimos has long been attracted to themes of power, manipulation, and social dynamics, so this plot is right up his alley.

Element Pictures and Imperative Entertainment will be producing the film. Element has already produced three of Lanthimos’ previous films, including “The Lobster” and “The Favourite”. Imperative has been rising up fast with titles like Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” and Palme d’Or winner “The Square.

No cast has been attached yet, and the release date is still unknown.
