The heads of Greek and foreign medical associations, along with dozens of doctors from Greece and abroad, participated in a ceremony reviving the Hippocratic Oath in its original birthplace, in the ancient Asclepion on the island of Kos where Hippocrates - the 'father' of modern medicine - once lived and practiced.

The ceremony was held at the archaeological site as part of the 2nd International Conference on Health Tourism in Greece that was held on the island of Kos on Saturday and Sunday.

A total of 34 doctors from countries as far away as Brazil and China took the oath and, according to the organisers, they will act as future ambassadors of Greece and the island of Kos.

The head of the Athens Medical Association George Patoulis, also head of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) and the World Institute of Greek Doctors, noted that they had gathered in the sacred site where medicine began to honour a great teacher and "remember the ethics of our science, according to Hippocrates, which must never be forgotten."

The conference was organised by KEDE, the Kos municipality and the International Centre for Health Tourism under the auspices of the Athens Medical Association.
