Impressive burial monument

The age of Alexander the Great brought sweeping changes in the ancient world, especially in the years following his demise (323 BC). In Ancient Pydna, a town not far from the Macedonian cradle of Aegae, an astonishing 50-metre long monument recently unearthed tells its own story in connection to Alexander. The memorial was constructed on behalf of a wealthy and powerful family, whose members fought in Alexander’s campaigns in the East, from where they returned victorious and rich.

The memorial is an impressive compilation of 30 statues, standing on a pedestal; its size and technique attests to the designers having seen similar memorials in Asia Minor, such as the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the ancient world’s seven wonders. The construction was torn down soon after by Alexander’s enemies, destroyed in an act of damnatio memoriae.
