British Museum exhibition presents the Parthenon Sculptures through the eyes of Rodin

From April 26-July 29, 2018, the British Museum will be hosting an original exhibition showcasing Auguste Rodin’s love for the sculptures of the Parthenon.

About 80 of the great late 19th-early 20th century sculptor’s works, along with 13 remaining drawings of his sculptures, will be exhibited next to 12 Parthenon sculptures included in the museum’s collection. The exhibition will be hosted at the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery. For this exceptional occasion, about 12 of the sculptures will be moved there from their position in the Duveen Gallery. Such a move has only occurred twice in the past. Exhibition curator, Ian Jenkins, has stated he wants “visitors to see the Parthenon sculptures through Rodin’s eyes.”

Rodin traveled 15 times to London, and he often visited the British Museum to design and seek inspiration. In the early years of the third decade of his life he’d make the copies of the Parthenon sculptures that were in Paris during the 1860s. In April, some of his sketches will be exhibited in London.
