Yorgos Lanthimos wins best European Director award for 2019

Greece’s Yorgos Lanthimos was named the best European Director and his film ‘The Favourite’ won Best Film at the prestigious European Film Awards 2019 in Berlin on Saturday, December 7.

The European Film Awards have been set up as a European mainland counterpart to the US Academy Awards and the British BAFTA. Over 3,600 filmmakers took part in the voting stage ahead of the Saturday event.

A comedy set in 18th century England, ‘The Favourite’ tells the story of a frail Queen Anne who occupies the throne and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.

The 2019 European Film Awards took place in Berlin on Saturday and ‘The Favourite’ a 2018 awards-season success took home the top prizes including Best European film, Director and Academy Award-winning star Olivia Colman won Best Actress.

‘The Favorite’ also won four more awards for “Best Comedy”, “Best Costume”, “Best Scenography”, “Best Editing”, and “Best Makeup.”
