Kostas Tzoumas: This is the founder who sold his company to the giant Alibaba

In 2007, he completed the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science School at the National Technical University of Athens. A year ago, with a student exchange, he had visited the equivalent of the University of Denmark, and in 2009 he continued his research at the University of Maryland in the United States. He then took a doctorate in computer science at Aalborg University in Denmark.

Kostas Tzoumas founded the data production five years ago together with Stephen Ewen – previously worked at Microsoft and the Technical University of Berlin – which provides mass processing and data transfer solutions to large companies. Artisan's data clientele contains names like Netflix, ING, Uber and the Chinese giant Alibaba.

The company was acquired by Alibaba, which was announced two days ago, and the price, as written in foreign press, amounted to $ 103 million. Purpose of the deal, a new open source big data initiative.

Based in Berlin and an attachment to San Francisco, data craftsmen have "raised" $ 6.5 million in two funding rounds, with Intel Capital to lead the last round. Startup has developed Apache Flink, an open platform for data recovery and large-scale applications for real-time analysis. Today, it is considered one of the fast-growing technologies. Alibaba has been working with the platform since 2016, while the deal is the first complete takeover of a Chinese company in Berlin's growing new venture sector

More specifically, Apache Flink 2014 was developed by Data Artisans, allowing large-scale data processing, given the existence of large data in the digital age, which frees up the software in the open source community. As the group says, it allows companies to create, run and run streaming applications with safe, scalable and cost-effective operation.

In an Apache Flink community blog post, CEO and founder of the start, Kostas Tzoumas, and co-founder of Chief Technology Officer Stephen Ewen, said they were happy about the redemption and note that along with Alibaba, they will increase their contribution to Apache Good and open data sources. Data Artisans CEO informed that Alibaba will also invest an amount not known to the company to develop Apache software

"Using the technical experience of both law and the public passion for the development of open source society, is we firmly believe that this agreement will further improve the Flink community development, accelerate computing technology and help strengthen an open environment for global developers "

Alibaba intends to promote the development of open source communities around computing technology and further develop a supportive environment for even more developers around the world.
