Driverless Buses Coming to Greece

The Greek city of Trikala is one of five European regions and the only urban area which will test automated buses without drivers experimentally, under the CityMobil2 (Cities Demonstrating Cybernetic Mobility) programme.

The programme is funded by the Seventh EU Framework Programme for research and technological development with the aim of enhancing the existing main public transportation networks by supplying a good transport service (individual or collective) in areas of low or dispersed demand.

CEO of e-trikala, the municipal company managing the project, Odysseas Raptis, hopes that the city will receive the 6 driverless buses at the end of the summer this year. As he explains, the vehicles will be used for six months and they will be moving along a specially designed route of 1,200 meters, at a low speed of about 20 km/hour, making 6 stops.
