BBC Four has announced a series of documentaries and films on the achievements of ancient Greece titled The Age of Heroes: Ancient Greece Uncovered, celebrating the unique legacy of Greek art, sculpture, philosophy, poetry and theatre.”
The first episode will be a televised production of Barbican’s sold out production of Antigone starring Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche (video) in the part of Sophocles’ fearless heroine and translated afresh by TS Eliot Prize-winning poet Anne Carson.
The other episodes of the series will include Papyrology expert Margaret Mountford on ancient poetess Sappho, classicist Natalie Haynes on glamour and beauty in ancient Greece with access to the British Museum’s major exhibition Defining Beauty and art historian Alastair Sooke on the Treasures of Ancient Greece.
