Australia’s First Mayor of Greek Descent Dies

The first mayor of Greek descent in Australia, state MP and member of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (W.H.I.A.) Steve Condous died on Friday morning after a short illness, aged 82.

Condous, whose family roots were from the Greek island of Kastellorizo, served as lord mayor in Adelaide from 1987 to 1993 and spent 25 years on the Adelaide City Council.

Flags at Adelaide Town Hall will fly at half-mast over the weekend as a mark of respect to the esteemed politician.

He was a Liberal Party member of the South Australian House of Assembly between 1993 and 2002, representing the electorate of Colton.

Condous was very active in local causes including community clubs and sporting societies.

In an interview in 2002 he had said: “Without the unwavering support of the Greek community, I would have never been elected as a mayor.”

He was proud of his Greek origins and he had spoken frequently about the difficult years that his parents had as immigrants in Australia.

He also spoke about the racist discrimination he and his father endured in the early years.
