Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. This soilless culture is known since ancient times, but it was rediscovered in modern times - in the 18th century - to surpass problems linked to traditional agriculture. Nowadays, this method is used even by the space industry, since the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) develops portable hydroponic devices, so that astronauts can grow their own vegetables during a mission.
In Greece, hydroponics is practiced in only one green house, situated close to the city of Drama, Northern Greece, but this is expected to change. Deputy Prime Minister Yannis Dragasakis is in talks with the company applying hydroponics for the establishment of five more units
The investment scheme is ambitious since each unit costs €35 million and requires a dry climate, and Northern Greece is the most suitable region for expansion. The company operating the current unit boasts 66,000 metres of planting lines and 329.000 tomato plants. Moreover, it uses eco-friendly production methods and not only is energy self- sufficient, but it also sells its surplus to the Power Company.
