Greece’s wind power generation in total installed capacity (MW) shows annual growth. In 2014, it reached almost 2,000 MW, that is 114 MW more compared to the previous year. Moreover, at the end of 2014, wind farms yielding an added 246 MW were underway, thus capacity for 2015 is expected to grow further.
Greece entered the game as early as 1986, but production remained stagnant for many years. It was in 2000 that wind energy production acquired some momentum, and the years 2010-11 recorded a boom in terms of targeted investment schemes.
The country is also expected to surpass the 2020 target which requires the European Union to fulfill at least 20% of its total energy needs with renewables by 2020. EU countries have already agreed on a new renewable energy target of at least 27% by 2030. This target is part of the EU's energy and climate goals for 2030.
