The archaeological treasure of Philippi of Kavala “travels” to New York

One of Greece’s most important historical and archaeological monuments and the last one to be included in the Unesco World Heritage Site list (2016), the archaeological site of Philippi of Kavala, “travels” to New York City in an impressive photography exhibition titled: “Archaeological Site of Philippi: A Landmark of European Heritage“. The exhibition is presented at the Consulate General of Greece building from January 8 to 4 February 2019.

The Hellenic Ephorate of Antiquities of Kavala-Thasos and the Consulate General of Greece in New York, organize this photography exhibition, giving the opportunity to the Greek expatriates and the American citizens to tour a historical area with multifaceted significance for the world history and the spread of Christianity.

The Battle of Philippi took place in 42 BC between the forces of Mark Antony and Octavian against Brutus and Cassius, and it defined the political history of the Roman state. In addition, the arrival of Apostle Paul and the establishment of the first Christian community in Europe, have been crucial to the evolution of Christianity into a universal religion.

The purpose of the exhibition is to present the history of Philippi and the wider region from prehistoric times to the present day.
