This year the Guardian picture desk has chosen Yannis Behrakis of Reuters as our agency photographer of the year. Here are the most astonishing moments he captured in two of the biggest stories of 2015 – the refugee crisis and the financial implosion in his home country Greece.

Philippos-Ilarion Sytilidis, a student from Thessaloniki, northern Greece has received a full scholarship to attend Harvard University, amounting to 69,000 dollars per year for four years. Philippos, who is currently in his last year of high school, will major in mathematics.

With all of the representatives of the "Federation of Greek Communities and Brotherhoods of Italy", who took part in the 10th Conference at the historic building Complesso San Domenico Maggiore in Naples with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Special Permanent Committee on Greeks Abroad Alexandros Triantafyllidis.

The President of the Hellenic Parliament Mr. Nikolaos Voutsis and the Bureau of Parliament met the President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Mr. Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

In the context of maintaining close tights of the Hellenic Parliament with the bodies of Hellenism of the Diaspora, the 1st Vice President of the House, Mr. Tassos Kourakis, welcomed in his office, the President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association (WHIA) Mr. Thomas Katsiantonis, State representative of New Hampshire in the USA and Mr. Leonidas Raptakis, WHIA member and state senator in Rhodes Island, USA. The meeting was also attended by the Diplomatic Advisor of the Hellenic Parliament, Ambassador Mr. Spyros Theocharopoulos.

During the 38th session of UNESCO’s General Conference (Nov 3-18), the 195 Member States unanimously agreed to ratify the creation of the “UNESCO Global Geoparks”.
