Greek tennis sensation Maria Sakkari has made it through to the third round of the 2017 U.S. Open tournament for the first time in her career. She will be facing American world champion Venus Williams.
Maria Sakkari is coming off a straight sets win over Arina Rodionova, that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 66% of her first serve points and 58% of her second serve points.
Sakkari has won her first two matches in straight sets and is coming off a match in which she won 44% of her return points. She has had a very inconsistent year, but she has made the third round of a grand slam for the third time this season and has to like her chances if she continues to give herself break points.
Sakkari hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time. She has split her last six matches on hard court.
Maria Sakkari, the daughter of former Greek tennis champion Angeliki Kanelopoulou, has faced Williams once, in the 2016 Wimbledon tournament, a match Venus won in three sets. The match took 31 games to decide.
