Chania’s stunning Domus Renier Boutique Hotel, located in the Venetian harbor has been awarded the “Best Historic Hotel in Europe 2018.”
More than 200 hotels participated in the contest by Historic Hotels Worldwide and the results were recently announced at a ceremony in Colorado, USA.
Judges consisted of leading worldwide architects, historians and art presenters, who were looking for the highest quality and aesthetics of the building’s renovation, depiction of the historical succession in its modern architecture, history of storytelling, presentation of the life of the people who lived there and relics.
Domus Renier Boutique Hotel is a small, luxury boutique hotel in Chania and consists of nine guestrooms and suites, all different from one another.
Most offer a sea view of Chania harbor and the famous Lighthouse. The rooms are furnished with specially designed pieces and decorated with unique articles.
Some rooms feature adorned ceilings, a testament to the Cretan Renaissance period of the building.
An architectural masterpiece built as a private residence for a noble family in 1608, the Domus Renier Boutique Hotel opened its doors to the public in 2016.
Wonderfully restored and renovated, the hotel still retains the classic historical elements that reflect the era in which members of the Renier family lived for several hundred years. The hotel’s beautiful seafront location gives guests a glimpse into the city’s past, where it served as the first defense against invading armies from the Roman Empire, the Byzantine peninsula, and the Ottoman Empire.
The hotel is located in the old port of Chania, the second largest city on the island of Crete, and also the capital of the local government region (municipality) which bears its name.
“We are filled with great joy and deep satisfaction, we want to thank all the collaborators who did an excellent job making this prestigious prize possible. Thanks also go to the team that does a great job highlighting its history and providing great hospitality,” management said in a statement.
