Modern Greek Studies symposium at Stockton University

Around 200 scholars from North America and Europe are expected to attend the 25th Biennial Symposium of the Modern Greek Studies Association (MGSA) which is to be held at Stockton University, New Jersey, November 2 -5, 2017. The conference will include presentations and a keynote address as well as film screenings and concerts.

Prof. Anna Triandafyllidou will deliver the keynote lecture entitled “Globalization and the return to the national: Perspectives on Greece’s ongoing crisis.” Ms Triandafyllidou is a Professor at the Global Governance Programme (GGP) of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS), European University Institute as well as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies.

The Stockton University School of Arts and Humanities houses the Dean C. and Zoe S. PappasCentre for Hellenic Studies where students are offered insights into the academic fields of Greek language and literature, history and culture, art, philosophy, politics, anthropology, classical archaeology and Byzantine civilization and religion.

Those attending the Symposium at Stockton will also have the opportunity to visit the Constantelos Hellenic Collection and Reading Room where 3,000 rare and significant works from Professor Demetrios J. Constantelos’ collection are kept.

Tom Papademetriou, professor of History and director of the Pappas Center, said to The National Herald that he feels it is a great honour that Stockton University has been selected to host the MGSA international conference and that they are pleased MGSA recognizes the strength of their Hellenic organization and their commitment to the field of Modern Greek studies.

Most of the symposium lectures will take place at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club while the keynote presentation will be held at the Stockton University Campus Centre Theatre.

The MGSA is a professional academic organization that is interdisciplinary in orientation and it seeks to stimulate the discovery and diffusion of knowledge about the language, literature, arts, history, politics, economy, and society of modern Greece, Cyprus, and the Greek diaspora.”
