The Greek "queen" of Argentine immigrants

The Greek "queen" of Argentine immigrants

At a time when refugees and immigrants are demonized and become scapegoats of nationalism, racism and intolerance - as we have experienced in Greece - in distant Argentina every year a great folk feast of immigrants takes place to commemorate the numerous ethnicities contributing to its multiculturalism.

This year, "at a distance of more than 12,000 kilometers away, a young 21 year old girl filled the entire Greek community with pride. Luisina Pilar Dellacosta was elected Queen of the Province's Immigrants at the 40th Feast held in Berisha, Buenos Aires ", writes the Greek community “Plato” in an open letter to the people of Greece, wanting to share her thrill with her countrymen.

Louisiana is a fourth generation immigrant. It was her grandparents, Vasileia Yialouri and Zacharias Delikostas who arrived from Chios in Argentina in 1906 and settled in Berisho.

There, next to the house where the five sons were born, they built a second to welcome and support other Greek immigrants arriving without material goods but full of faith and hope for a better life.

Zacharias was one of the founders, in 1910, of the “Plato” community, and so the traditions and customs were passed down from generation to generation, reaching Luisina a century later.
