Three Greek Students Sweep Medals at 26th International Mathematics Competition

Three Greek university students swept the medals, winning one gold and two silver, in this year’s International Mathematics Competition (IMC), which took place in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria between July 28 and August 3.

The team from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was comprised this year of students Kyprianos Iason Prodromidis, Sotiris Armeniakos and George Kontogeorgiou.

Prodromidis, who is just a first-year student, managed to win the gold medal despite having to compete against older and more experienced students.

Armeniakos and Kontogeorgiou were each awarded a silver medal.

The young students were tasked with trying to solve five problems each day, and they had to compete for two consecutive days.

As the IMC explains, the competition is planned for students completing their first, second, third or fourth year of university education with a maximum age of participants being 23 years of age at the time of the competition.

Problems are derived from the fields of Algebra, Analysis (Real and Complex), Geometry and Combinatorics, and the working language for the competition is English.

This year’s competition was organized by University College London and it was hosted by the American University of Bulgaria.
