Young Greek wins first place in world poetry competition

Young Dimosthenis Dimitrios Despotidis who hails from Andros has won Never Such Innocence foundation’s 2019/2020 ‘Impact of Conflict on Communities’ competition.

The Never Such Innocence foundation in collaboration with The British Council chose the theme of A Fight for Freedom, asking participants to “highlight the contributions made by the countries of the Commonwealth in Africa and the Caribbean during the Second World War” through a poem, speech, song or piece of artwork.

Dimosthenis Despotis was one of over 4,000 participants from 44 countries around the world and took out the poetry category for the 11-14 age group.

The year 8 student made sure to thank his teacher Elina Tsalicoglou for her support and encouragement and his mother Margarita Vartholomeou for her being a source of inspiration and paving his path of life.

The work of all the winners from all categories was included in a special digital competition winners booklet, which was prefaced by a congratulatory statement by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

This year’s competition marked the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe day, commemorating Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on 8 May, 1945.
